Socrates was a Greek philosopher. The Neo-Classical (please note proper spelling) period was influenced by all things Greek and Roman, especially following the discovery of Pompeii. The poses of the figures in the painting (and the idealization of the old Socrates, with his 6-pack) are directly taken from Classical art.
I hope this was not a homework question. If so, your teacher should have done lessons on the Ancient World.
