This is the point at which the River Irwell flows into the Manchester Ship Canal. The Ivy Soap Works in Ordsall Lane were opened by Goodwin Bros, in the 1870s, and which were taken over by Colgate-Palmolive-Peet Ltd in about 1950. In the subsequent years they were expanded but, in 2008 the factory was closed and production moved to other European factories.
