Kelly Saks, 23, a Miami native, was crowned as the new Miss Earth Florida during a 2-hour ceremony on Saturday July 17 in Miami.

Saks will now move on to represent Florida at the national competition Miss Earth United States in Las Vegas, where one woman will be chosen to represent the country in one of the largest pageants in the world, Miss Earth.

Saks received the crown from the hands of Naples-resident Aubrey Carr, who in 2009 represented Florida at nationals in the teen division, and Miami-native Michelle Piwko, the 2009 Miss winner.

Of Cuban background, Saks was born and raised in Miami and graduated from the University of Miami in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Communications, and Broadcast Journalism and Theatre Arts. She was a Henry King Stanford Scholarship recipient as well as a Bright Futures Scholar.

During her college years, Saks was part of the University’s cable station UMTV and worked as a reporter for UMTV Today and Newsvision. She was also an intern at CBS4 in Miami where she extended her newsroom experience.

Saks is now the Editor in Chief of Kelly’s Closet, a style blog, and a contributor for the Examiner.com and Fashify.com.  She has been featured on MTV’s Pretty Smart as well as USA’s Burn Notice. She has had featured appearances on NBC6 South Florida Today and Deco Drive during Miami Swim Week.

Saks currently volunteers for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami and the American Cancer Society and is now developing her environmental platform T.A.S.T.E, Teaching Adolescents Success Through Ecology.

As part of her duties as Miss Earth Florida, Saks will spend one year educating the community on practical ways to keep the environment clean and healthy.
