Like it or not, he's here to stay

Forget about national championships, the most first round draft picks, and the longest home winning streak in NCAA football history.  Coach Randy Shannon’s four year contract extension means what you see now is what you’ll see in the future.  This doesn’t mean the Hurricanes are stuck in mediocrity and will never play in a BCS title game again, but the chances are slim.  I realized this early on when Shannon was promoted and the university didn’t recruit a big name coach.  I’m a Canes fan and did not like this to say the least.  But what does this mean for the university, our community, how upset should we be?

Gators 32 – Hurricanes 0.  This could be the score if we played this year, but this is players arrest records.  Though at the top of this chart the Gators are not unique, most of the top teams have the most player issues.  Just as Miami was on top of this list when we couldn’t be beaten.  Is this what we want?

Considering most of you want a playoff system because your world will end if the polls slight your team, I’m guessing the answer is yes.  A few years ago I would have agreed, but now that I have kids approaching college age I’ve changed my perspective.

It was an exciting time during “the convicts versus the catholics”; it was us against the world.  Miami Vice was the hottest show on TV, Miami was the murder capital of the U.S,   and there was something sinister and intriguing about our city.  But that’s not what we want Miami’s legacy to be forever.  Being bad for a little while is fun but we all know you have to change and grow up. Even Luther Campbell, the notorious rapper who gave money to players and encouraged outrageous behavior is now a respected family man.

Randy Shannon witnessed all of this first hand, as a UM player, then as an assistant coach.  He knows how the University of Miami got its reputation, the mistakes it made, and how to change it.

He’s not the best college football coach in the country and probably never will be.  I see UM progressing to battle for the ACC Championship, but a national title is far fetched.  But the Hurricane football team will be guys that we can be proud of for what they’re not doing.

Maybe Gainesville and Columbus and Tuscaloosa don’t mind bringing thirty or so criminals into their community for the sake of saying they’re the “best”.  But we do things differently here.

Is Randy Shannon the best coach for Miami?  I think so.
